How to Compare Two Solar Quotes

Two solar quotes at the "same price" can be very different. A fair comparison looks at more than price — it lines up the system size, production estimate, equipment, warranty, and contract terms side by side.

Production is the moving number

Same system size, different annual kWh? That's the result of different modeling assumptions — shading, derate, orientation. Ask each contractor how they modeled your roof. See Understanding Solar Production.

Where quotes commonly differ

  • Production estimates — Higher isn't automatically better; it may be optimistic modeling.
  • Equipment — Different panel and inverter brands perform and warranty differently.
  • Warranty and labor coverage — The single biggest hidden difference. Two "25-year warranties" can cover very different things.
  • Financing costs — Dealer fees and interest can quietly shift the real cost of a $0-down offer.
  • Roof coverage — Does the workmanship warranty cover roof penetrations and leaks? Get it in writing.

Price per watt — useful but not everything

Price per watt (total price ÷ system watts) normalizes quotes of different sizes. But it only tells you anything when the equipment and warranty terms are comparable. A lower price per watt with cheaper equipment and weaker labor coverage is not a better deal — it's a different deal.

Installer history

A 25-year warranty from an installer won't matter if they're not around in year 10. Look at how long the company has been operating, whether they use employees or subs, and whether they'll service the system after the install. See Questions to Ask a Solar Company.
